The House Of Peacock<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The House of Peacock first opened its doors on February 9, 1837, the same year Chicago (population 4,000) was incorporated as a city. According to one historian, the opening of the city\u2019s first retail jewelry establishment in the small frame building on Lake Street marks Chicago\u2019s passing \u201cfrom semi-savage conditions to civilization and refinement.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Great Chicago Fire<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

When the great fire engulfed the city in 1871, headlines read, \u201cChicago in Ruin\u201d. Fortunately the House of Peacock survived; all the valuable merchandise had been locked in a fireproof vault (16 in the referencing image).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

CD Peacock Receives Its Name<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Elijah passed the mantle to his son Charles Daniel, and in 1889, the name was changed to C.D. Peacock.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Expansion<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

As the city grew, so did CD Peacock, expanding with multiple locations. Each store designed to be a showplace for the finest jewelry, stately time pieces and luxurious gifts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 1993, C.D.Peacock was purchased by Seymour Holtzman, a prominent businessman and advocate for free trade. Mr. Holtzman served as the National Finance Co-Chairman for the Reagan-Bush Campaign, and was appointed by President Reagan to the United States Department of Commerce\u2019s Industry Policy Advisory Committee for trade policy matters.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n
