The first registered business and oldest guild jeweler in the Chicago area, CD Peacock’s tradition of commitment to quality and service has lasted over 180 years. Part of Chicago’s history since 1837, CD Peacock has catered to generations of Chicagoans offering timepieces, fine jewelry and so much more.
The House Of Peacock
The House of Peacock first opened its doors on February 9, 1837, the same year Chicago (population 4,000) was incorporated as a city. According to one historian, the opening of the city’s first retail jewelry establishment in the small frame building on Lake Street marks Chicago’s passing “from semi-savage conditions to civilization and refinement.”
The Great Chicago Fire
When the great fire engulfed the city in 1871, headlines read, “Chicago in Ruin”. Fortunately the House of Peacock survived; all the valuable merchandise had been locked in a fireproof vault (16 in the referencing image).
CD Peacock Receives Its Name
Elijah passed the mantle to his son Charles Daniel, and in 1889, the name was changed to C.D. Peacock.
The Expansion
As the city grew, so did CD Peacock, expanding with multiple locations. Each store designed to be a showplace for the finest jewelry, stately time pieces and luxurious gifts.

A New Family Business

In 1993, C.D.Peacock was purchased by Seymour Holtzman, a prominent businessman and advocate for free trade. Mr. Holtzman served as the National Finance Co-Chairman for the Reagan-Bush Campaign, and was appointed by President Reagan to the United States Department of Commerce’s Industry Policy Advisory Committee for trade policy matters.
